Because my usual ceramic work is a bit more detailed and labor intensive, I thought it would be a fun challenge to make an edition of small and less expensive pieces. It’s a way for me to work in a series and have a taste of life as a “production potter.” I’ve always been hesitant to work in a series because making the same thing over and over seemed like it would be boring, but this project surprised me. I love the repetitiveness of building the same dish on repeat, of drawing the same frog over and over, and of choosing special glazes. I assume that most ceramicists who work in multiples for consistency, but rigidity is against my nature. I’m pleased to find so much beauty in the inconsistency. The dishes themselves are imperfect and have variations. The drawings of the frogs, although all nearly identical at first glance, have fun differences. Coloring them in with tinted glazes is another chance for sweet discrepancies.
Each piece is wonkily handbuilt. If you are looking for a pristine piece of handmade ceramics then this is not it! It is built securely but with character. It is food and microwave safe, but I would recommend lovingly hand-washing it. Each piece is one of a kind, made out of earthenware clay and painstakingly sgraffito-ed with goofy imagery.
