I first started making this mug in the height of the pandemic, when we were all working from home and communal studio spaces were shuttered. It's been years since I've worked in a group studio, but I found myself missing it. In this one, I included myself underglazing at a table in front of shelves of finished work. Even though I have headphones on, I'm happy to be sharing the space with these other ceramicists, all working hard, happily. A few other favorite moments in this mug - two friends sharing a conversation about a recently finished mug, talking about what is working and what they want to change for next time. And finally, I included my BFF and studio mate, Joe, extruding clay by the mug's handle. I like his yellow pants. I am really into this color combo of reddish purple, blue-ish purple, yellow, and orange. This mug holds about 12 oz of coffee, tea, wine, or tequila.
Each piece is wonkily handbuilt and hand-drawn. Each line and color is done by me! If you are looking for a pristine piece of handmade ceramics then this is not it! It is built securely but with character. It is food and microwave safe, but I would recommend lovingly hand-washing it. Each piece is one of a kind, made out of earthenware clay and sgraffito-ed with goofy imagery.
